Do Pharmaceuticals in Water Pose a Risk to Human Health?

Guest Speaker:  Dr. Edward V. Sargent

Global Safety and the Environment

Abstract:
Within the last decade, an increasing number of studies have identified pharmaceuticals in the surface waters of Europe and North America.  Advances in analytical chemistry allow pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs) and other organic molecules at concentrations in the nanogram per liter level.  PPCPs have been detected in wasterwater, surface water and less so in groundwater and drinking water.  While these studies have understandably raised questions about potential risks to human health, relatively few risk assessments have been conducted.  In this presentation the results of risk assessments conducted by the pharmaceutical industry will be reviewed.
