Mission
The mission of the Forensic Science Program at NJIT is to educate and inspire a new generation of forensic scientists who possess a deep understanding of scientific principles, ethical practices, and advanced technologies to contribute significantly to the field of forensic science. Our program is committed to fostering an environment that promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and experiential learning, enabling our students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this diverse and ever-evolving field.
Goals and Objectives
- Program graduates will demonstrate professional, ethical, and legal conduct within the forensic science and legal systems.
- Students will be able to explain the legal and ethical requirements of forensic practices, including chain of custody, evidence examination, crime scene processing, laboratory report writing, and proper laboratory practice.
- Students will be able to demonstrate proper evidence collection, processing, and documentation techniques and defend analytical results through expert witness testimony.
- Students will be able to explain the legal and ethical requirements of forensic practices, including chain of custody, evidence examination, crime scene processing, laboratory report writing, and proper laboratory practice.
- Program graduates will apply theoretical knowledge and technical skills through practical forensic research or field experience.
- Students will be able to execute an independent forensic research project, internship tasks that integrate theoretical knowledge with professional laboratory practices, or a forensic senior seminar that examines a current forensic science topic of national or international importance.
- Students will be able to evaluate emerging forensic field methods and regulatory changes to maintain professional competency in data interpretation and technical analysis, as well as professional responsibility and reliability.
- Students will be able to execute an independent forensic research project, internship tasks that integrate theoretical knowledge with professional laboratory practices, or a forensic senior seminar that examines a current forensic science topic of national or international importance.
- Program graduates will integrate foundational sciences and forensic core concepts to solve complex problems in investigative and laboratory settings.
- Students will be able to apply core principles of chemistry, biology, mathematics, and legal issues to the analysis of physical evidence. Students will also be able to pursue graduate or professional degree options post graduation.
- Students will be able to perform advanced analytical techniques specific to their concentration (biology, chemistry, digital forensics, and Crime Scene Investigation) to solve investigative problems

B.S. in Forensic Science
The Forensic Science program, the first of its kind in New Jersey, provides a foundation in the natural sciences and mathematics to prepare students for a career in forensic science or graduate or professional school. Students receive hands-on training in field methods, analytical skills, and laboratory procedures currently used by forensic scientists in crime and investigative laboratories.
