CES GUIDE TO UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Multiple research opportunities are available for undergraduate students in the form of independent study (3 credits), volunteer research assistantship, or paid research assistantship. Contact individual faculty directly.
Ten-week paid ($3,000) Provost Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship is available every year. The Scholarship is competitive, with the application deadline in early April. Students must contact, well ahead of the deadline, prospective faculty, who will define project goals and write a letter of support.
NSF BioSMART REU (Research Education for Undergraduates) Summer Program
This REU Site at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is supported by NSF to provide undergraduate research experiences on BioSensor Materials for Advanced Research and Technology (BioSMART) at the Environment and Biotechnology Nexus. BioSMART capitalizes on the interdisciplinary biosensor research opportunities for undergraduates (UG) at NJIT in the departments of Chemistry & Environmental Science, Biological Sciences (Federated with Rutgers), and Chemical & Materials Engineering and the members of the BioSMART Center.
The program provides a unique learning experience by introducing UG students to the rapidly growing and technologically relevant research field of biosensors through their designs, development, characterization, and applications. Students participating in this project will receive a $6,000 ($600/week) stipend for the 10-weeks program, free accommodation, and a host of career development activities and industrial visits. The program is designed for four-year and community college students interested in completing graduate school or attending professional school and who have not had substantial research experience. Most students in this category will be rising sophomores with credits in introductory Chemistry, Physics, and Biological Sciences with a grade of B or better. Such scholars are not bound by location, are interested in exploring the STEM discipline with an interest in technology and innovation, and are willing to explore the STEM environment that NJIT offers. Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) (T34)
Program Goal and Structure
The goal of the Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) program is to develop a diverse pool of undergraduates who complete their baccalaureate degree, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.). Training grants offset the cost of stipends, tuition and fees, and training related expenses, including health insurance, for the appointed trainees in accordance with the approved NIH support levels. Training grants are usually awarded for five years and are renewable. Full details are found in the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) PAR-21-146. To learn more please visit here.
