CES is a leading producer of STEM degrees in the region, with over 250 undergraduates plus approximately 100 masters and Ph.D. students. We offer degree programs in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry with a Biotechnology option and an MS degree in Environmental and Sustainability Policy. Our BS degree program in Forensic Science provides students with foundational solid scientific knowledge and mastery of forensic field practices and laboratory procedures. Students also gain concentrated expertise through one of the program's three options: forensic biology, forensic chemistry, and digital forensics.
CES is student-focused, with research opportunities for undergraduate students through NSF REU, NIH U-RISE, URI fellowships, independent study, and paid research assistantships. In addition to standard Teaching and Researcher Assitanchips, Graduate students are supported through NSF and NIH Graduate Fellowships, Provost & Fulbright fellowships, and industrial grants.
CES has 26 faculty members, including 18 tenured/tenure-track and eight University Lecturers. Seven dedicated staff members support research and teaching efforts. Faculty expertise is in the broad areas of organic, inorganic, biochemical, environmental, physical, analytical, and theoretical chemistry. CES faculty are actively conducting research in biophotonics, biosensors, biochemical approaches to forensic science issues, effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in reproductive systems, and trace metal biogeochemistry. Faculty research projects are funded with grants from major funding agencies and industries. CES faculty includes three NSF CAREER awardees and fellows of major academies, including the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Institute for Medical & Biomedical Engineering, and the National Academy of Inventors. Core research facilities include the Otto H. York Center, NMR facilities, Crime Scene Facility Lab, BioSMART Center, and Mass spectrometry facilities.
