PhD in Environmental Sustainability Policy Studies

The PhD program in Environmental Science with a concentration in Policy Studies is a collaborative effort between the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science and the Division of Policy Sciences at NJIT. Students with one year of general chemistry and a semester of calculus are eligible to apply. Students who lack an appropriate background may be considered for admission and required to take a program of courses that is designed in consultation with the graduate advisor.

Applicants with a master's degree in environmental sustainability policy studies, environmental science, chemistry, biology, chemical engineering or related fields will be considered for admission. Applicants will be expected to make up any deficiencies in their academic background by taking courses in environmental science or policy. Applicants are generally expected to have a GPA of 3.5 or better, and international students must submit a TOEFL score of at least 575. Exceptional students may be accepted directly into the program with a bachelor's degree, and will be required to take 42 credits of course work and 36 credits of dissertation research.

A minimum master's GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent, is normally required for admission. GRE scores must be submitted for the doctoral program. International students must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 575.

Teaching assistantships (TAs) and Research Assistantships (RAs) are available on a competitive basis. In addition to tuition remission, assistantships include stipends for PhD students in the range of $1,200 to $1,400 per month ($14,400 to $16,800 per calendar year).

• Personal statement (two to three pages)
• Three letters of recommendation
• A current resume
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
• International students are required to pass the TOEFL at 575 or above.

For those students that begin the application process electronically, the supplemental materials required for the Environmental Sustainability Policy program may be mailed directly to the program. Please note, formal application is made to the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science.

DEADLINES

Applications for Fall admission should be received no later than January 15 for applicants who wish to be considered for financial aid, April 1st for International applicants. and June 5 for all others; applications for Spring admission should be received no later than 15 October. All supporting documents outlined above must be received by these dates. Please use the Office of Graduate Admissions website for submission of all application materials.
